Broadmoor – Majestic Colorado Springs Resort

The Broadmoor

We hadn’t even heard of The Broadmoor prior to planning a week long thanksgiving trip to Denver with the family.  However, after spending a couple of days at this amazing five diamond resort we won’t ever forget it!  This historic resort has the old world charm with an amazing Cheyenne Mountain backdrop and all of the new world amenities you can hope for.  Although a stay here is not cheap by any means, you do get your money’s worth.  And you can score yourself a deal by timing your trip just right.

The Broadmoor not only caters to world dignitaries, magnates and celebrities but, to everyday families as well.  You can enjoy its numerous facilities, services and amenities visiting as a couple or a family.  We can’t wait to go back as we thoroughly enjoyed our stay here during the thanksgiving week last year and here’s why.

Play

Rain, Snow Or Shine, The Broadmoor offers plenty to keep you busy, from family bingo to Wii tournaments, to paddle boats and biking.  End the day by catching a movie as a family at a full size Theater and bring your own snacks or drinks.  Most kids are also happy to hang around the pool, and The Broadmoor offers both an outdoor and indoor pool to keep from getting the rainy-day blues.

We reserved a lane at the PLAY restaurant at $55 charge per lane for one hour and were able to order food to our lane and enjoyed dinner while bowling (or you can choose to dine afterwards.)  My 6 year enjoyed the whole experience as he played video games and we enjoyed some drinks at the bar while waiting for our lane.  Not only does the resort’s six-lane alley offer a “play” area with shuffleboard and pool tables, as well as gaming consoles like Wii, there’s also an extensive wine and local craft-beer selection in addition to mouthwatering menu items including New Mexico Style Nachos and Crispy Pork Belly tacos.

We didn’t get to take advantage of some of the other unique offerings at the resort due to the timing of our trip.  The Broadmoor offers free shuttle service daily to a beautiful zoos in the mountains.  Not only is the mountain setting quite unique (elevation 6,800 feet), but it’s also offers a special treat to feed the zoo’s renowned giraffe herd, said to be the largest in any zoo.  Additionally, you can tour the property via Mountaineer Sky Ride, a chair-lift style ride offering spectacular views of the zoo and Colorado Springs.

We did explore the Penrose Heritage Museum located across the street from the hotel.  The Penrose Heritage Museums’s extensive collection contains 31 horse-drawn carriages and 13 motorized vehicles, including three Pikes Peak Auto Hill Climb race cars (circa 1920s), Mrs. Penrose’s 1928 Cadillac limousine, and a 1906 Renault.  Our 6 year old was fascinated by the historic carriages, cars, and American memorabilia during our visit.  And by the way, the admission is free!

There is much much more to explore (golf, tennis, pickleball, fishing, horseback riding, spa, zoo, zip lining, train rides, shopping etc.) at this vast resort if you have the time and budget to do so.

Eat

The Broadmoor features 10 restaurants as well as numerous cafés and lounges that range from the state’s only five star & diamond restaurant (Penrose Room) to casual Pool Café and the Espresso News coffee shop.  We ate at a few different restaurants and cafés on site and they were all great, they do however charge a 20% automatic gratuity.  We ate at the Italian restaurant, Bar Del Lago in the West building where we were staying and ordered some drinks, Calamari, Pork Chops and Pizza for our son.  All of our dishes came our really good, we were definitely more than satisfied.  We also ate at the casual British Pub (Golden Bee) which had a nice ambiance and decent pub fare dishes.   If you are in the mood for the ultimate date night, put the kids in evening Bee Bunch camp and get dolled up for a sophisticated multi-course meal at the Penrose Room (we might just try that next time.)

Sleep

You will find an array of guest room choices throughout this Colorado Springs hotel, including Classic Rooms, Superior Rooms and Premium Rooms where the mountain view is pretty standard.  We had opted for the best deal for our budget which was a classic room however, we fortunatley ended up in a superior room with a great mountain view after a mix-up with our original reservation.  The Broadmoor also offers suites, cottages, brownstones, and estate homes for bigger budgets.

Escape

Overall, it was a true escape from the hustle and bustle of the contemporary environment, the old world charm, exclusivity and the service make The Broadmoor a site not to be missed during your Colorado vacation.

However, don’t let all that luxury intimidate your wallet as the Broadmoor offers a budget-friendly value for families. Click here for list of their current deals and special packages.
